I use this to protect a small apiary from black bear. Land has no power and I don't get out to visit much, so solar was pretty much the only option. Well made product and keeps a charge (even in western washington, the land of constant drizzle).

This particular charger has a loose fitting 12 volt battery inside, which is only supported on it sides by cardboard. So, YES, it appears to have something loose inside; however, use a flat blade screwdriver and pop the top off and you will see what I mean. I took out the cardboard and inserted foam, but fiberglass insulation will work and so will small PVC.Now, as for operation, I only have a third of an acre in which I mounted two 12.5 gauge aluminum charger wire strands near the top ( but below the top rail ) on the inside of a six foot commercial quality chain link fence. Okay, so maybe it is overkill (no pun intended), and while the analog meter on the face of the charger is pegged over the 10,000 volt mark. WOW . . . but not to worry that is not a bad thing. The chain link fence acts as ground and has much better conductance than a dozen ground rods.

We bought this charger for our 18 acre goat ranch. We secured the perimeter with goat wire, then ran an electric wire need the bottom. All of the cross fencing is done with electric wire. Wow. No problems and we put it in three months ago. Putting up an electric fence is way easier and cheaper than a traditional goat wire fence.I would definitely purchase another one of these chargers for my newest land. We took it out of the box and let it charge a week in the sun. attached the wires, and, voila!, instant fence. The charge is really strong (as I know from personal experience-- ouch!) and our goat kids learned very quickly to avoid the fence.

I've used this fencer for over a year now and have had zero problems. My ground is incredibly rocky, preventing me from using a standard ground rod. The company was very helpful with alternative ideas that were easy to try and actually worked. I charged the battery prior to use and the battery indicator has been in the green ever since. I live in the MidAtlantic region and have plenty of cloudy, gray days but the fencer continues to work. I highly recommend this fencer for maintenance free, worry free animal containment!

So far we love this charger. We fence in hay fields for pasture in the Fall. The animals are always testing the electric fence. They tested it once and learned their lesson... It seems to hold a charge for a long time. We let it charge for a week in the sun then set it up. We had clouds and rain for a week straight after that, but the fencer still held a good charge.

Parmak Magnum 12 Solar Pak Low Impedance 12 Volt Battery Operated 30 Mile Range Electric Fence Charger MAG12SPWe have three of these in service, the oldest being 4 years, in a rain forest. Still working. One came broken and was exchanged. 30 miles is overkill, but I like the extra power in case we have minor electrical shorts (grass usually).
