I have been very happy with how well this filter have been keeping my turtles tank. It is a pain to clean...I'm glad that I had read reviews and expected that.

works well in my 5 and 10 gallon tanks, only problem is that the flow through them is so slow I need to have a circulation pump in the tank or the turtle feces just sits on the bottom of the tank.

This is the second 501 Turtle Canister Filter that I've bought. The first I've had for about 5 years now and it was great at keeping my turtle tank clean. However, I had to do like most other reviewers stated and buy activated carbon separately. My turtle is getting much bigger (about 8 inches shell length), and this filter keeps the water clean for about 3 weeks or so when he's not in hibernation. When he's not eating, it does the trick for 6-8 weeks. I think that I'll have to get a more diesel filter next time because of his size.

Only been hooked up for about an hour, doing great, not using for a turtle, but using for a 10 Gallon Custom Planted Betta Tank with overflow and 2.5 Gallon sump. Using this for the pump between the sump and tank. It uses a sealed system to suck water into the mini filter. Simple yet functional. i chose this over the other (nano 501 filter) due to they are the same thing and this was cheaper. I feel the 511 would have been a better pump, but was looking for a small water flow due to Betta and this worked wonders and half the price. now i just have to wait for the actual filtering results.

I bought it with the only purpose to use as activated carbon reactor system. So the actual flow rate was not very crytical for me. I placed it about 4ft under the tank water level. Measyred flow rate when one compartment was packed with activated carbon chips was about 20G/h. That is absolutely enough for my purposes. It is relatevly quiet and well maid

I have had Yertle, a red eared slider turtle for over 22 years now. Purchased this filter last year and it is amazing. Is quiet, works great and is easy to clean.
