My hermit crab loves this substrate. She can burrow tunnels in it, and it helps keep the humidity in her tank at a comfortable level when misted daily. My only complaint is that it can get a little messy when wet or moist, but that's negligible and to be expected. The 8 quart bag filled up my 10 gallon tank to about a 4 1/2-5 thick layer and I have about a storage ziploc bag left.

This works great for when the crabs are molting, and they love it otherwise. My only problem is that it gets a bit soggy because sometimes they spill a little of their salt water or drinking water. It absorbs plenty of moisture in my tank, and rarely ever gets moldy. It worked so well for mr hermit crabs and I will continue to buy it!

Love this product. I use this product in my container garden and mix into the soil in my other gardens. The plants I mix this into the soil always does much better, even with lack of care. Excellent product.

I bought this for a hermit crab substrate after having bad results with clumping sand. This one package made enough substrate to fill a 5 gallon bucket when damp. It holds moisture very well and doesn't feel muddy. I mixed it with plain white sand to make a substrate for my hermit crabs, and immediately 2 of them dug in. One stays in it all the time except when he's eating, and the other 2 are much more active since I've replaced the substrate with the coconut fiber-sand combo. It also keeps the humidity up, which is really important for crabs. I'm going to keep using this for sure. The only complaint I have is that it's very challenging to break apart when it's compressed. I stabbed it with scissors for a while then gave up and just expanded it all at once, so now I have a bucket of damp dirt that I hope doesn't mold or anything before I need to add more substrate. It's also in my goldfish tank cleaning bucket, so I'm not sure what to do... But other than that, it's ideal.

Our Russian Tortoise likes to burrow in it to stay warm.We change it weekly, and it seems to stay clean and not mold when it gets damp. The level of coarseness is inconsistent, but doesn't seem to cause a problem.

I use this both for my tortoise tank and for planting. It's a wonderful substrate and easy to use. Plop it in a bucket with a gallon of water and it will soak up the water and expand to it's full size and it's very moist. I make mine up in a plastic tub with a cover so that I can use it whenever I need to, there are airholes in my container so that it won't get moldy or anything but it doesn't dry out either. It lasts in there and stays moist for many weeks. In the tortoise tank when it dries out from the heat I just use a spray bottle to mist the fiber so it's moist again. I really love this stuff.
